The Magpul X-22 Backpacker Stock: A Clever Stock Option for Ruger’s 10/22 Takedown

Magpul X-22 Backpacker Stock Being Carried

Every once in a while, a new product comes along that fully captures my attention. Magpul’s new X-22 Backpacker stock for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown (TD) has done just that. The X-22 stock is reminiscent fo the Henry AR-7 semiautomatic U.S. Survival Rifle chambered in .22LR, a favorite of bush patrols and backcountry adventurers. The Henry quickly disassembled into separate assemblies without tools: barrel, action and two eight-round magazines stored within its synthetic waterproof stock. When apart, the rifle was 16 inches in overall length and could fit into a standard-size knapsack.

Magpul’s new X-22 Backpacker stock accomplishes a similar feat, yet works with all existing Ruger 10/22 TD models. I find that it is also compatible with many aftermarket barrels as well. The 10/22 barrel and action firmly fit within the new stok assembly and are secured by two screws. Installation takes the novice only 10 to 15 minutes.

What is unique about the X-22 is how the forend and barrel assembly lock into the stock during transport. Remove the barrel assembly by pressing the takedown plunger under the forearm and slide the chamber end of the barrel into a rubberized sleeve at the stock’s toe. The forend rides a raised fin just rear of the grip until locking into the stock. To remove the barrel assembly fromt he stock, simultaneously press two buttons on the forend, and it slides out.

Magpul's X-22 Backpacker Stock Compartment

Aside from the convenience of the X-22’s ability to stow within itself, two integrated storage compartments caught our attention. The first is an O-ring-sealed, water-tight compartment within the grip that was sized to fit a Victorinox Huntsman knife, matches and tinder, plastic bags, etc. A second compartment is also found beneatht he hinged, removable/replaceable stock comb. This compartment is specifically engineered to accept three 10-round 10/22 magazines or one 10-round magazine and a cardboard box of 50 .22LR cartridges. Removable dividers prevent rattling, and all items fit securely. I set up my compartment to hold two magazines and two small Ziplock bags containing 20 rounds each, which offeres me 60 rounds on board – not to include an inserted magazine.

An optional X-22 optic mount replaces the factory barrel block and provides a functional platform for the sight of your choice while featuring a groove that allows us to maintain the use of factory sights.

The X-22 includes 4 quick-detach slight attachment points (two per side0, an MOE nonslip rubber buttpad and two cheek risers (one standard and one optic height). The stock is available in black, FDE, Stealth Gray and Olive Drab Green. I like mine so much, that I’m about to cut a check for another Ruger 10/22 Taketown.
